    Planting my garden

Post by Susan on Wed May 14, 2008 8:29 pm

Due to all the rain this spring, we still haven't got much of our garden in. So, I began planting some of the seeds in pots, that can be transplanted later on. So far, I have several varieties of tomatoes, and some hot peppers planted. I was able to get a small area by our side porch, planted with herbs. Most of the herbs are seedings now. We also planted some watermelon and birdhouse gourds. The birdhouse gourds have become seedlings! I love getting outside and planting things and watching them grow. It is when I feel closest to the LORD. As I watch and tend to the garden, I meditate on how the LORD watches over us!

We have planted several varieties of Tomatoes, in buckets, and they are already sprouting! We also made two (2) raised planters, and have hot chili peppers and turnip greens. We are working each evening at getting the rest of the garden tilled and planted! Can't wait until those fresh veggies are ready to eat. cheers

My tomatoes turned out so wonderful this year. I really don't eat many tomatoes but they are always my favorite garden plant. I picked 3 yesterday. They are still a little green, but shiny enough to pick and put on the kitchen window sill to finish ripening. If I leave them on the plant too long the worms get to them.

GloryB, That's wonderful that you are already picking tomatoes. My mom always put a nail in the bed next to the tomato plants, or circled the root with salt to keep off slugs and other worms. I read recently, that you can use paprika, to keep incects and other animals from eating your veggies and flowers. We plan to trying this, and see how well it works.

We planted 50 tomato plants, 20 bell peppers, 2 rows of squash, 7 cucumber plants, rows of corn. We still have more corn to put in. We have also been busy making bamboo teeppees for the pole beans and melons to grow up. There is a small patch of yellow water melon by our fence, and also zucchinni. My hubby read that you can plant zucchini by something to climb, so, so, we re trying this as well. I do have some more planting to do, and once it is all growing, I'll try to post some pics! The garden is a pretty good size! We laid about 4000 sq feet of landscape fabric, so I won't have to weed, which didn't cover the entire area. We are planning on putting sunflowers on the east end of the garden, where the landscape didn't get, to help cultivate the soil for next year.

Oh, I also read on another forum about using banana peels for fertilizer. The banana peels give nitrogen to the plants, which plants love. The people were using it on their tomatoes and on roses. I have added some to my flowering plants, and they are full of blooms.

cheers Well, the garden is just about completely planted! PRAISE THE LORD! cheers The corn is already popping up out of the soil. sunny All the melons, and the pole beans are growing, and there is very little else for me to do, but water, feed the plants and wait for the harvest! flower The tomatoe plants now have a few blooms too! Yippee! cheers With all the tomato recalls, I am glad to be harvesting my own. The only things left to plant are the cabbage, carrots and radish, that we love to eat. I am praying that the LORD sends rain as needed and that we do not suffer drought, flooding or any damaging storms. I am hoping to post some pictures of this huge garden soon. flower

Thank you FATHER, for all the good thngs that we can grow and eat. Let this garden nourish many of our family, neighbors and friends. Let it be a way to talk about YOUR GOODNESS for each of us. In JESUS NAME, AMEN.

4000 square feet is a HUGE garden. I'm assuming you can and freeze the surplus?

We will be canning some of the veggies, and freezing some. I also dehydrate tomatoes, they are very good for stews and sauces. We also plan on giving some to our family, neighbors and friends. flower
